Horse box pizza offering good food on the hoof
.10:39am Wednesday 10th July 2013 in Business By Catherine Bolado .

Lynda and Richard Davis KEEP your eyes peeled for an unusual horse box visiting a field near you soon.

Inside the horse box is a wood fired pizza oven that creates tasty meals in just 90 seconds, thanks to the 400 degree oven.

Pizza on the Hoof is the brainchild of Weymouth couple Lynda and Richard Davis, and sprang from a conversation with a friend of theirs one night in Italy.

They were discussing pizzas in the UK and the idea was born to put a wood-fired oven in a horse box. The couple used to live in southern Italy and still have an olive grove there. They now make their own flavoured oils that they use on their pizzas.

Since the business started just over a year ago, the couple have had great success at travelling round to markets, fairs, camp sites, art and food festivals and at village events. They recently won the Best Overall Product and Most Innovative Watercress Product with their watercress and toasted cashew pesto at the Alresford Watercress Festival in Hampshire.

To find out where the horse box will be next please go online and visit the company’s website

Watercress Festival, Alresford, Hampshire, Sunday 19 May 2013

This was just one of the highlights at the annual Watercress Festival on Sunday 19 May when 12,000 foodies took advantage of the unexpected sunshine to descend on Alresford in Hampshire, the UK’s ‘capital of watercress’ to celebrate National Watercress Week and the start of the UK season

The winner of the Most Innovative Watercress Product, which also won the title of the Best Overall Product, was ‘Watercress and Toasted Cashew Pesto’ made by Artisan pop up Pizza restaurant, ‘Pizza on the Hoof’, which is currently based in the South West but which will return home to Italy in the Autumn. Diana and her fellow judges, Samantha Lyster, deputy editor of Fresh Produce Journal, and Charles Barter, of the Watercress Alliance, felt this product deserved to win as it had beautiful colour with a fresh, watercress flavour and a good balance of watercress and cheese.

Alresford Watercress festival

I was at the Alresford Watercress festival on Sun 18th May and had one of your pizza's for my lunch. It was the best pizza I have ever eaten, including some I have eaten on various trips to Italy ! The base was very thin, the edges, which I normally do not eat, were crispy and tasty; finally the cooking of the toppings was done to perfection. Thank you for a lovely lunch !

Sample Menu

These are some samples of the menu's we can provide.
We have however found that(especially children) prefer to chose their own toppings from a
selection provided. You watch us assemble them and then, cook the pizza in the oven in front of your eyes. The actual
cooking process takes 90 seconds.
We provide flavoured oils for drizzling made with extra virgin olive oil from Puglia in Southern Italy.

We are an artisan pop up Pizza restaurant. All our pizzas are cooked in a wood fired forno, which is mounted in a beautiful vintage horse box. We studied the art of pizza making in Southern Italy, amongst the ancient olive trees who gave up their secret of using the finest sun kissed ingredients. We always try to use local ingredients which we prepare with love and reverence. The handmade traditional pizza ovens, also known as a forno, gets up to temperatures of 400 degrees and cooks a thin crust pizza in 90 seconds.

We can be booked to appear at your event throughout the country. We are based in the South West for the summer, before returning to our home in Italy to harvest our olives. Bringing our own extra virgin olive oil, for next seasons pizzas.
With the rise in street food culture we are in demand for village fetes, festivals, sporting events, shows, and more and more weddings.
Our pizzas are  traditional Neapolitan thin crust. The toppings can be made new and funky or old school classics, it’s up to you.
The horsebox, we call Gina Maria, is a beautiful lady who like an Italian movie star has aged very well and still stands out in a crowd. La Bella Donna.
